Southington Town Council votes to join regional planning agency

The Town Council voted unanimously Oct. 28 to join the Capitol Region Council of Governments, the largest regional agency in the state.

“It makes the most sense to the town of Southington,” said Town Manager Garry Brumback.

Brumback recommended Oct. 15 that the council join the council. The council postponed a decision so members could study the issue. The Capitol Region organization has 30 members and is expanding to 40.

At the Oct. 15 council meeting, officials from the Council of Governments of the Central Naugatuck Valley and the Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency, the organization to which the town belongs, made a pitch for Southington to stay with the sister agencies.

Municipalities have until Dec. 31 to decide on a regional agency, after which the state will designate one for them.

Councilor Lou Martocchio said he did research, spoke to Brumback, and looked into all the options. He said it was not an easy decision but agrees with Brumback’s recommendation.

Brumback said he hopes to preserve relationships made with the Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency.
